The Full Bucketniers RP (Open)

It's the year 1970, and the American railroad industry is modernizing at an incredible pace.  Steam locomotives as a species are being killed off in preference of more reliable and efficient diesel-electric locomotives.  Thousands of the old iron giants are being dragged off to scrap yards and smelting plants in long, ominous funeral trains, their eyes wide and pleading for help that will never come to any human they pass by on their way to their inevitable deaths.  To their old crews, these locos are family, but to the industry, they're now a liability, worth nothing more than their weight in scrap steel, at a rate of about forty seven dollars per metric ton.

In northern Washington State, trouble is brewing in the small railroad city of Fort Fairfax.  The local railroad company has been run out of business by the mega-tycoon that is the Union Pacific.  With the rail line shut down and deteriorating from years of disuse, the only way in and out of the valley was via the main 'highway', Route Seven, but on December 3rd, 1970, heavy snow and ice caused a rock face in the mountains to collapse, completely burying three miles of Route Seven under millions of tons of granite boulders, snow, and ice near the town of Saint Josef.  Luckily only ten people were killed, but the road was rendered completely impassable, practically cutting off the entire valley of Bucket Falls from the outside world.  (There are other roads out of the valley, but Route Seven was the only one that was remotely safe in winter conditions, and the only route capable of supporting large trucks in any weather)  The only hope for Fort Fairfax, as well as the neighboring towns of Thomas Canyon, Josha's Cradle, Simonville, and Dunk Town, and the hamlet of Elena Junction, was reopening the old railroad.  The two main industries in the canyon, Dyken's Coal Mine and the Lena's Mineral Mining Company, were among the first to get onboard the bandwagon of reopening the line, followed closely by the Dunk Town Sawmill and Fort Fairfax Petrochemicals.  The companies could all theoretically survive through the winter by temporarily shutting down their operations to save capital, then reopening after the spring thaw would allow for Route Seven to be cleared and rebuilt, but in a rare stroke of plain humanity all four of the company CEOs decided that the railroad reopening would not only be good news for all of them, but more importantly, would be good news for all the people living in the valley.  With the support from the local industries and the residents of the valley, a group of citizens from Fort Fairfax formed the Full Bucket Line Preservation Society, which soon enough became the Full Bucket Line Railroad Company.  The initial investments from the industrial companies provided the FBLRR with most of the initial capital they needed to get most of the line repaired to the point of being safely usable, but that still left them with a rather serious problem.

What the hell good is a railroad with no locomotives and no rolling stock?

When the line was first shut down, the Union Pacific bought up everything worth recovering at the bankruptcy auction, which included all the locomotives and nearly all of the rolling stock.  There were a few cars left behind scattered around the line, but all needed serious work if they were even salvageable at all, and even all of them put together weren't going to be enough to run the railroad with.  Luckily most of the old railroad's employees were local residents, so there was no shortage of qualified workers, but the company was quickly running out of cash, and they still didn't even have any locomotives.

And so the search began for the trains that could help to save the valley of Bucket Falls.  For the size of the line they would be trying to run, starting off they would need at least one or two small locomotives for shunting work and pulling maintenance trains (probably small steam tank engines or diesel switchers), two or three mid-sized locos for general freight traffic and short, local passenger trains, and one large, powerful main-line locomotive for bringing the big freight trains in and out of the valley, as well as pulling the fast passenger services.  It's a tall order, but hopefully the folks at the FBLRR can find some of what they need without breaking the bank.

And hopefully the engines themselves will be willing to cooperate after being neglected and cast aside for so long.

Its the nature of time that the old ways must give in
Its the nature of time that the new ways come in sin
When the new meets the old it always ends the ancient ways
But as history told, the old ways go out in a blaze

~~~~~
Okay, so if you can't tell, this is a world where many of the vehicles that humans build and use are sentient beings, sort of like in "Thomas the Tank Engine" or "Cars" (if Cars had humans).  They have a fair bit of control over themselves, but still need human crew to fully operate most of the time.  They do have faces, but not Thomas-style faces where it covers most of the front of their body.  They're much less intrusive, being just eyes and a mouth somewhere that makes sense on the front of their body, like this:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
As sentient beings, they've all got their own personalities and feelings, most have names, they can feel pain and other physical sensations with surprising sensitivity.  Their bodies are a bit flexible, but not quite to the extent of the characters in "Cars".  When a locomotive and its crew are familiar with one another and have formed a tight bond, one can expect to see significantly better physical performance out of both.  The mental health of a sentient vehicle has a significant and direct impact on their physical capabilities, meaning a happy, satisfied train with a good crew that they're close to will tend to perform significantly better than their design specifications say they should be able to, while a depressed or angry locomotive or one with a crew that they're always at odds with will have substantially worse general performance, or may even straight-up refuse to work at all.
Please keep in mind for the vehicles that most of what the FBLRR is going to be using/getting their hands on is going to be old, outdated, and generally unwanted equipment.  Very little, if anything, is going to be new or modern (for the present time period of 1970) so try to keep to trains that were built between the 1940s and the early '60s, or were being retired from service in 1966 at the latest.  Trucks could probably be a bit newer, like '68 or '69 (giggity), but toss in some older ones as well for added historical nostalgia stuff.
It wasn’t long before the pull-and-push merchandise/relief train was pounding along at a steady sixty-five miles per hour and hitting nothing but green signals, though that was less than shocking considering they were on a relatively low-traffic piece of the UP line at the moment.
~~~
Dirk chuckled at Frankie’s shout of joy and patted the old Fowler's side a bit in congratulations.  “Once we head back to Fort Fairfax and tell the boss, I’m sure it won’t be long before we get you dug out of what’s left of this shed and towed back to your new home.  Then it’ll be pretty simple to get you fixed up and back to work again.  You gonna be satisfied with local freight and possibly some yard work?  There’s some industrial trackage in Fort Fairfax and Simonville that has curves too tight for most of our other engines, but your wheelbases are so short that you’d be very well-suited for those tight corners.”

~~~
Isaac looked around carefully as he was shown around the rest of the ground floor rooms of the orphanage.  “Seems like there’s a Stark difference in the quality of the rooms the public usually would see and the rooms that are kept private to everyone but the kids and staff here.  That seems a bit dishonest and not too promising for the children to me…”
~~~
Joseph simply nodded in understanding and agreement to Alice’s offer, knowing it would help to talk to kids who weren’t too scared of retribution to be honest and truthful about what happened here.

~~~
Connie began listening to Roger only once she had totally finished closing up Helen's boiler and securing her pilot again.  When Roger was finished she was grinning and said “Oh hell yeah, that sounds great!  What do you think Helen?  You wanna head back up to Vancouver again for old times sake?”
Duck was glad they didn't have to stop on their way back towards home and the other towns around there.
~~~
"Yes, that sounds wonderful." Frankie said with a smile. He was eager to try anyway, if they could get him running again and out of this place.
~~~
"Yeah, we try to keep those rooms cleaner for the guests." Mark said with a shrug then sighed "Not that we have many come, but we hope."
~~~
Alice nodded and listed off some names of kids that would speak truthfully at least so long as the matron didn't find out to punish them.
~~~
Helen chuckled and nodded "I would like that. I can certainly try." She said with confidence. She did want to at least  try.
Rosie smiled when she saw Eric's old farm just east of Newton coming up on the north side of the tracks, and made their presence known to Frankie and everyone else there with a long, drawn-out series of excited horn blasts as they rumbled by about three hundred yards from the front of Frankie’s shed.  “Oh hey, look at that guys!” the F7 called out to her compatriots over the intercom.  “Gus, Dirk and Riley are at Eric’s old farm talking to Frankie.  I wonder how everything went for them.”
~~~
“For sure, but first Eric told us to leave the groundhogs a little gift from him in his absence, isn’t that right Gus?” Dirk said with a smile.  Before the slightly older German migrant could reply, Rosie and Duck's train came charging through on the main line, signaling a greeting to them, to which Dirk laughed and waved and Riley blew his horn in reply.

~~~
“Yeah, you can always hope,” Isaac said.  “You have any thoughts about how come you guys don’t get hardly any visitors or people wanting to adopt kids?  This valley has some of the most compassionate, caring people I’ve ever seen, it just seems odd to me that nobody ever comes.  I have a friend whose wife is sterile and they’ve been wanting a child for years, but when I asked him he said he’d never even heard of this place.”
~~~
Joseph scratched down a note on the names that Alice listed off, then smiled in thanks and stood to leave the closet, as well as sending in a quick call back Sheriff’s Department to send a few more deputies to assist the two already there.  He was intending to go speak to the matron again and let her know that he planned on having someone privately speak to each of the kids and get their personal, unfiltered, and unbiased words about what their experiences were like.

~~~
“Well then… hell, let’s do it!” Connie said excitedly.  “Roger, go let Mr. Iverson know that we’re gonna take the Vancouver oil job and to give a call to one of the new part-timers in Simonville so we can have a brakeman ready to come with us when we swing by there to grab a caboose.  Then get yourself all ready go, you might wanna pack a big lunch, this is gonna be a full day's work here.”  With Helen’s boiler all sealed up tight, Connie hooked up a hose from one of the shed's industrial boilers to a valve in the Hudson's steam system, then opened up the flow.  She wouldn’t be able to get too much pressure in Helen’s boiler with just the shed's system, but it would give them just the jump-start that they would need for Helen to creep out of the shed and over to the coaling and water towers.  Once they were there and had filled up her tender's bunker, tanks, and her boiler again, they would be all set to get on their way.
Duck looked over to what he could see of the farm, letting out a greeting whistle too before replying. "Well, with them there, it's probably good news, we can ask about it when we get back home again. Give us an incentive to go fast." He teased as if they weren't already going fast.
~~~
Roger chuckled and waved once he could then looked back to the others "Right, we get to give those varmits a reason to run away, then we gotta set Frankie up with the boss and figure a way to get you out of here without damaging you, though the shed's likely a teardown and rebuild project."
~~
Mark shrugged again "We were always told that nobody wanted older kids to adopt, that they always want babies and we don't keep babies, so we were ignored. Youngest we take is 5 years old, we aren't set up for babies or toddlers really."
~~~
Alice nodded and waited for him to go out before peeking out to the hall and slipping to her room again. She might get in trouble for being downstairs before, but it looked like she was in the clear for this part of her helping the cop. Several of the other kids were up because of the walkthrough before, but they listened to her explain that the cops were there to help them.
~~~
"Will do" Roger said, turning to go do that and get a big lunch ready for them to take along for the ride, along with an extra thermos of coffee for himself. At least he would be expecting to get up early from here out. He came back to Helen, getting that loaded and helping as he could to get the engine filled and ready to go. This would be quite the test on the new patching she had gotten, but best to know right off if it was going to hold or not, right?

“Ohh really?  Not going fast enough for ya already, eh?” Rosie cracked with a laugh as, once again, a new mechanical whining sound could be heard rising over the ever-present rattle and roar of the consist.  “Well hang on to yah buffahs, cause we’re goin’ for a ride.  Mr. Yeager, ahead Warp One if ya please.”  Duck would find himself once again yanked forwards and all his helpful slack jerked tight as Rosie spooled up her turbochargers and surged ahead, now passing 70mph as the sun began coming out from behind the clouds, further increasing their already good visibility.

~~~
“Or more likely a 'dig him out and burn the rest down' plan, with how bad that old barn looks,” Riley chimed in.  “If he'd still want a she’d to stay in here instead of at the terminal in Fort Fairfax, we should just build him a new one.  Maybe a little while later we could put down a few more sidings and have one or two longer sheds put in and an oil tank to go with the coal and water towers, turn this place into an away-from-home resting place for engines coming back from long hauls.”
“You know, that’s not a bad idea Riles,” Dirk chuckled in agreement as he watched Duck and Rosie’s train disappear towards the east.  “As long as Frankie wouldn't have any qualms against totally getting rid of this barn altogether.  Would you be okay with that, bud?  Are you attached to this place at all or would you be fine with seeing it go for good?”
~~~
“They weren’t looking for just babies though,” Isaac said.  “They were looking for just about anyone, even older kids and teens.  It just doesn’t make sense to me, they’ve been looking for about a year now and they've got plenty of disposable income to support adopting and raising an older child.”

~~~
Joseph let Alice explain the situation to the other children who were awake, then one at a time he would take them into the next room to be in private and to protect them from possibly being retaliated against for something they said or revealed.
~~~
Once Connie felt she had sufficiently charged Helen’s boiler with enough steam pressure to get them outside to the towers, she had Roger go to open Helen’s bay door for them, then went about releasing the old Hudson’s brakes and setting her up to creep forwards to where they would get her filled up.  “You ready for this girl?  Nice and easy for now, we're gonna hit the coaling tower first, then get you a good drink before we go on our way,” she said, smiling as she set Helen’s reverser and cutoff, then gripped the throttle lever and eagerly slipped it open by a single notch.

Duck was surprised by the added speed, but caught up again to help push the load "You sure you even need me back here?" He asked after a minute or so. This was fast for him, he wasn't sure the last time he had gone this fast, it was fun.
~~~
"You guys have to look around before you bun the place down, you might be surprised what else Erin had in here with me. What all he would work on just to keep me company." Frankie said with a grin.
"That's what I meant, take this one down and build another in it's place." Gus said, looking back to the engine then around a little.
~~~
Mark shrugged, he wasn't sure what to say. "All I can say is what I've already said, hardly anyone comes here to adopt. Is there anything else you want to see?"
~~~
The other kids that were willing to talk said much the same as Alice in their own words and adding other details from their lives. Each of them knew of Cat and her gift to them to help them get through.
~~~
"I am ready" Helen said, glad to finally be able to release her brakes and move under her own power again. She moved forward, picking up Roger once the door was closed and heading to get filled up for the trip.

“Yeah, I’m sure,” Rosie teased.  “You’ve gotta help me keep control of the train when we’re heading down the grade from Josef’s Cradle, and help me split it up and distribute things once we arrive in Simonville.  Plus there’s that short but steep b#tch of a grade going up into Josef’s that you’re gonna be very helpful on, trust me.”

~~~
“Oh yeah, right, of course,” Dirk said in realization.  “He did say something in his will about all the projects and hobbies that he took up and did in here to keep himself around you.  Maybe me and Julia can even find a few to take up ourselves and finish for him.”
~~~
“I think I aught to go and talk with Sheriff Matthews and the matron upstairs…” Isaac said low and softly as he turned and made his way towards and up the staircase.

When Joseph’s deputy, and eventually their backup arrived, he explained everything to them and left the interviewing of the children to the three of them as he went back to speak to the matron again.  He was getting a very, very sour feeling about this place and the way it was being run.

~~~
It took the trio a moment of mostly rolling with the steam valves closed to save pressure, but they soon had Helen's tender lined up under the coaling tower's dump chute.  After Roger had climbed up outside on the tower, Connie instructed him on how to release the locks on the doors and they dumped about seventeen short tons of Dyken's coal into her open tender.  With that done, they rolled forwards a short distance more and stopped at the water tower.  Once they had the pipes hooked up and the flow was at capacity, it would still take a bit of time to fill up Helen's 14,000 US gallon water capacity.  As they were waiting, the young blonde looked hintingly at Roger, and when he didn’t immediately interpret what her gaze meant she gestured to the big, heavy steel coal shovel that they had found in the bottom of Helen's tender buried beneath the last of her old fuel, then to the open scooping door at the front of her tender and said “Go on little man, build a nice fire for your girls here.  Helen's been cold for far too long, and with the weather the way it is right now, we're gonna flood this yard with steam as we leave and I want it to be glorious…”
Duck laughed and settled into the higher speed, watching to be sure there was no trouble from his end of the consist.
~~~
"That would be good" Frankie said with a smile, he just hoped some of the projects had survived for them to see.
~~
Mark went back to his post, at the front desk when the cops let him. It was time to get the kids up to eat breakfast anyway, and they tried to do their job around the cops. Oddly enough the matron couldn't be seen supervising as she usually would be.
~~~
Roger chuckled and nodded, going to get the fire going well enough. "Hey, that's what you get for waking me up like that/" He teased
(Debating whether I should have cabooses be sentient as well, though typically quieter and tend to talk very little outside of what they seem important to work, and they only open up more if they’re super salty and bitter and angry, or super relaxed and content.  I’m on the fence because it could make some things a little more complicated, but it could also lead to some interesting situations and opportunities for unique backstories and such.  Thoughts?)
“How ya holding up back here Duck?” Corey asked with a chuckle as he looked back at the stocky little British tank engine from the right window of the Rock Island ex-vis caboose that Duck was pushing against directly.  “Rosie giving you a good enough workout by just getting you to try and keep up?  Never knew that a little guy like you could hit 74 miles per hour pushing ten loaded US freight cars and three cabooses all by themselves.”
~~~
“Well I’ll definitely have to see what we can manage to save from in here,” Dirk said with a smile as he began carefully making his way back towards the exit of the shed.  “So Frankie, if you don’t mind, I think we'll go take care of Eric’s groundhog neighbors, then head back to Fort Fairfax with the good news, alright?”

~~~
“Miss Springfield?” Joseph asked insistently as he knocked on the door to the matron’s quarters for a third time.  “Ma’am, I need you to answer me now.  If you don’t respond, I’ll need to assume that you’re in distress or hiding something and I will have no choice but to force entry to the room.”
~~~
Connie made a face and stuck her tongue out at her fireman as she watched him getting to work, splitting her gaze between Helen's numerous gauges and Roger's work.  She couldn’t help but notice that thick Texan muscle showing through his clothes and the relative ease with which he could move the 30 pounds of shovel and coal from Helen’s bunker into her firebox over and over again as he built her fire, lit it, then continued stoking it up.  Especially once it got warm enough in the cab for them to both take off their jackets, she felt drawn to Roger's figure.  Not nearly as much as she was drawn to the engine she was about to be driving, but she still could notice the attraction.

"I didn't think I could either, but we are." Duck said then smiled a little "It is a good workout."Yeah, it was good, but hard to maintain.
~~~
Frankie chuckled and nodded a little. "Yeah, he complained about them a lot. Go on, take care of them and get your boss on board. I'll be here."
Gus patted his side then headed to follow Dirk out "We will be back for you."
~~~
There remained no answer in the room, since she wasn't in there anymore. He would find that out if he went in. Some of the plates were missing, though everything else seemed to still be in place.
~~
Roger looked to her once the fire was going well and they were only waiting for the water to finish filling so they could go. He smiled then went to check the levels to see if they were ready.

“So you people really still use steam engines?...” said the Rock Island caboose after a good while of relative silence.  “Are you really going to be using us too?  Or are we gonna be scavenged for parts and then put down like the others?”

~~~
“Amen to that,” Riley called, honking his horn in agreement as Gus and Dirk mounted back up to head back towards the house.
“We'll make it soon, Franklin, just watch.  I bet you’ll be back home by Christmas and working by New Year’s, if not sooner.”  With that the trio got Riley turned around, then headed back to the ranch house and began guesstimating the approximate position of the main groundhog den that Eric had reported to them in his will.  “You think that three sticks is good?  Don’t wanna hurt the house any more than the weather already has, but at the same time I would prefer that these obese ground rats get the message of 'get out and stay out' perfectly clear.”
~~~
Joseph swore after he had forced his way in and inspected the room, then radioed to the other deputies to see if any of them had seen signs of somebody leaving the building.  While he did that and the other officers looked around, he went to check the windows to see if there was any evidence that they’d been opened and either someone had left through them or thrown something out through them.

~~~
“Alright, all set,” Connie said once she saw that Helen’s water capacity had been reached, Roger had shut off the flow, and they had a good head of steam built up.  “You two ready for this?  It’s a pretty long trip to Vancouver from here, but since we’ve got no load for now I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t go right up at the speed limits the whole way.  You ready to really stretch your legs again, Empress?”
"Of course we use steam engines, and we won't be scavenging you either." Lilly replied when she heard the caboose talking. "We want to save the past, not destroy it."
~~~
Gus nodded and looked to the house then around the ground. "Yeah, that should be good, though I'm not sure how helpful they will be with the snow and all here."
~~~
There was evidence of someone putting something down out the window, though it was inconclusive what it was. Fact was, she wasn't in there now. She had fled, seeing the jig was up here.
~~
"I'm ready" Roger said as he took his place again.He smiled at Connie then focused on keeping the fire going right again.
"I'm ready to try" Helen said softly then took a breath and said it again, a little louder. "I'm ready."
“Really?  Heh, well you’d be the first I’ve met in a long time, I’ll tell you that,” the caboose mumbled.  “The SP Bay Window is the only one of the three of us with a name.  He says his old crews used to call him Calvin.  The Santa Fe never had one, and it’s been so long for me that I honestly can’t remember mine.  Who are you all?”
~~~
“Ohh I have a feeling that this will still be plenty effective regardless of the cold and the snow,” Dirk chuckled.  “You ever messed around with American TNT?  This stuff takes no prisoners, I’ll tell you that.”

A few minutes later, Dirk was securely taping the bundle of three sticks together in a triangular stack as they walked towards where they could best estimate Eric's directions were intended to lead them.  He had a small pickaxe hanging on his shoulder and Gus had a mining shovel with him, both having come from Riley's oversized bed-mounted tool box.  “Now let’s see… ohh, okay… I’m definitely feeling some sharp, linear bumps in the dirt under the snow around here, seems like we’re pretty close.”

~~~
Joseph swore and quickly got on the radio to call in the bizzare turn of events, which he was certain by now was more than probable cause for arrest, detainment, and filing charges against the matron.  He ordered for a 5-block perimeter to be set up around the orphanage and gave everyone a detailed description of the matron and the orange BMW coupe he noticed had disappeared from the back alleyway, including the license plate number.  After that he decided to head down outside to determine what exactly it was that she had thrown or dropped out the window before she left.
~~~
“Alrighty then,” Connie replied, cracking her knuckles and her neck a bit before she squeezed Helen's throttle handle to release the notch lock, then advanced it three stops before letting it click into place.  Even before Helen would start being able to get moving on her own, the super frigid air was causing the clouds of steam flowing from her valves and pistons to condense at an accelerated rate and expand dramatically, and soon enough the whole area around them had been completely flooded with a giant cloud of steam, which completely obscured Helen’s entire form and had a pillar of cloud rising up forty feet from her smokestack.  “Let’s rock and roll!”

Lilly would introduce them all by name, already trying to think of names for the other two cabooses. "Is there a name you would like?" She asked to see if they had a preference.
~~~
"Only from a great distance." Gus said, looking over to him then around before shoveling some snow away where he figured the mounds were. "That should be about right"
~~~
It appeared she had dropped at least a bag or two before coming out to get them, probably by rout of some back staircase so she wouldn't be seen.

By now all the kids were in the cafeteria, eating their oatmeal and unaware of the change in circumstances.
~~~
Roger chuckled, looking at the steam, or as much of it as he could see before they would start to move. He could imagine what it looked like from outside even as he got to work again.
“Well it’s nice to meet you folks,” Calvin said once Corey had managed to get his intercom system working and tuned to the right frequency.  “And it really feels great to finally be on the job again.  Thank you guys so much.”
“Hey Miss Lilly?...” Nathan asked curiously.  “Maybe we could name the one from that Rock Island place Rocky?”
~~~
It took Dirk a moment after Gus had cleared the snow to dig a small pit in the frozen dirt, but after that he scribbled with a pen on the side of one stick “From Eric with Love”, handed the bundle to Gus along with a small matchbook, then started moving back towards the safety of the driveway ahead of time.  “Here, you aught to have the honors, just be ready to book it once you light the fuse.”

~~~
Once he had determined from the tire tracks what the first two turns were that Lisa had made, Joseph headed back inside the orphanage and took a look around at the kids having breakfast.  He frowned a bit at what he saw and headed into the kitchen to speak to the one cooking the food.
~~~
“Eeeeehehehehehehehehehehe!” Connie cackled excitedly as they slowly broke free of Helen’s steam cloud, advanced through the yard, and made their way onto the main line heading northwest.  “How fast you wanna go, Empress?  You wanna highball it to Simonville, or you wanna take it easy for now?”

Lilly smiled at Nathan and nodded "If he likes that name." Lilly said before telling the others the suggestion to see how they liked it. That one might not be able to talk by radio after all.
~~~
Gus chuckled lightly and nodded. Yeah, he certainly would book it once the fuse was lit. No way was he staying close. He let Dirk get back then lit the fuse, running to get away and to a safe place before it could blow up.
~~
It was the same young woman that had been there before. She was eating her own bowl of oatmeal for breakfast when he came in. She startled and set the bowl down, looking to him then to the bowl and back "Um, can I help you?" She asked shyly.
~~~
Helen thought about that before offering what was probably a compromise. "How about we start slow and speed up along the way?" That repair had made her a little nervous that something else would go wrong and sideline her before she had a chance again.

“I think that’s a pretty good choice,” Calvin said, smiling as he heard rather unanimous agreement to Nathan’s suggestion.

“Yeah, sure, whatever, at least I’m finally gonna be doing something again,” the RI caboose huffed, seeming rather hot and bothered by all the commotion.  “I guess I just wonder why couldn’t I have been bought and fixed up by a proper, professional railroad running at least semi-modern equipment.  If you ask me, steam engines lost their usefulness in this country twenty-five years ago when we started learning how to actually make proper diesels.  Locomotives like you old puffballs only belong in places like China where they’ve got hardly any oil or money for modern technology, but more coal than they know what to do with… freaking yellow-#ss Commie-backing--…”

“—Aaaaand that’s enough of that, Rocky,” Corey cut in abruptly, silencing the bitter old caboose's offensive rant.  “Chill out man, just give it some time and I’m sure you’ll be getting along fine with us.”

Rocky just scoffed and remained silent.

“How about something like Pete for your new name, AT&SF?” Ashley eventually piped up.  “Kinda sounds like the end of ‘Topeka’, right?”

“Yeah, actually, that does sound kinda nice, what do you guys think?” the caboose replied, seeming a bit eager about the choice.

~~~
A few seconds after Gus reached where Dirk was taking cover behind the corner of the house, the fuse burned down to the blasting cap and there was a very loud, sharp CRACK and an eruption of dirt and snow was hurled high up into the air.  The very high blast speed of the TNT completely shattered the frozen ground all around it and chucked the debris upwards out of the hole as much as four times higher than the roof of the ranch house.  Gradually the cloud of smoke, snow and dirt powder began to drift away and fade in a slight easterly breeze and thousands of marble-sized pieces of frozen dirt were raining down into the snow away from the buildings and the three beings watching.  Riley cackled a bit in excitement and Dirk simply had to join in after a moment.  “Well… You think we got 'em?” the ginger chuckled as he looked over at Gus with a grin.”
~~~
“Actually, I think you can help yourself and these children a lot more,” Joseph said, a small smile returning to his face.  “Come on upstairs with me, we're going to get to work cooking a proper meal for everyone here with the stuff the matron's been keeping for herself in her kitchen, and I’m certain you could use some helping hands up there getting things going.”

~~~
“Alright, sounds fine by me,” Connie said, waiting until they had passed the signal leading out of the yards so that they were on the main line proper, then gradually opening Helen's throttle up to around the one third point.  Without any cars behind her, this would give her the power needed to reach and maintain about 55 miles per hour without any issues.  This was far below her rated maximum speed of 100 mph in passenger service, or 85 with freight.  “Feel free to let me know if and when you feel good about getting up to go a bit faster, girl.  Remember, this is your shakedown run just as much as it is ours, maybe more."
"I like the new names" lilly said with a smile and a chuckle "And just so you know Rocky, we do have a 'semi-modern' engine too. We are just a new company to run mostly in the mountains between our little towns and we love the old engines."
~~~
Gus nodded, peeking around the side of the house and giving a whistle at the damage given. "Yeah, I'd say so."
~~~
The young woman blinked and frowned "We aren't allowed up there." She said worriedly, though she stood to go with him. She knew the kids to ask for help too, once her fears were absolved.
~~~
Helen was simply enjoying getting to move again and making sure nothing would go wrong before giving her ok to go faster. Her worry eased with more miles taken

"Yeah yeah, whatever, not like I really have a choice in the matter," Rocky groaned in frustration before falling silent again.

A few hours later, the group had dropped off the freight cars bound for Josha's Cradle and were pulling into the yards in Simonville, getting themselves ready to begin marshalling the consist into two proper trains for Duck and Rosie to take separately, and separate the cars that had been ordered by companies and businesses here in Simonville so Duck could organize and deliver them all by navigating the tight industrial trackage on the west side of the city.  Rosie had also had Lilly call ahead to ask if Detective Benson would be able to meet them at the railyard with some of the things he had mentioned before about possibly donating for Nathan.

~~~
The pair would find that the dynamite had left a hole five feet deep and fifteen feet across in the frozen ground, which only prompted Dirk to laugh a bit again.  "Well shoot... yeah Gus, I think you're right.  Guess we sent a pretty clear message with that, didn't we?"
~~~
"Well the rules are changing," Joseph said, letting himself smile a bit wider as he headed upstairs with the girl.  "I believe it can be said that I'm in charge of the orphanage for the time being, and I say we're using the matron's things to give you and the children all a proper meal for once."

~~~
"How does it feel Helen?" Connie asked as they were reaching seventy miles per hour by the time they charged past the main complex of Lena's Mining Company.  "Finally on the run again, you feeling alright with the speed?  I mean, we can keep going, but we're not trying to break any records here, at least not yet."
Detective Benson replied that he would be there to meet them with his son and the box of clothes. It was his day off, so he could spend as much time as they had with them.
Duck helped get the cars sorted so he could take his part and get it where it needed to go.
~~~
Gus laughed and nodded then shook his head "I don't think we will have to worry about them anymore, though we may have to fill in this hole."
~~~
The girl followed him, pausing at the doorway again before daring to step inside. In the kitchen there was variety, though not enough of any one thing to feed all the kids.
~~~
Helen laughed happily. "It feels great." She said with excitement. She was past her shyness now, no longer worried about breaking now that she was going. She had just needed that push to get started.

As the two engines were arranging their trains properly, getting them ready for splitting up and delivery, they would hear a somewhat familiar sound coming from the south side of the yard.  It was a cheerful and powerful steam whistle that climbed all up and down through tones as it was played, and Rosie grinned excitedly when she saw the black and purple shape of one of her oldest friends pulling into the yard, not knowing she was picking up a caboose and brake crew to head out on her own first job.  “Helen!  Well Ah’ll be damned, look at you already all the way out here!  What in Bluebells are you doing way out here?”

“Oh hey, would you look at that?” Connie said with a grin as she leaned out the window of Helen’s cab and watched as they pulled into the yard.  “Rosie and Duck are already here with the merchandise and everything, we aught to be able to grab our caboose and just bolt.”

~~~
“Yeah, but we can save that for when the ground thaws a bit,” Dirk chuckled.  “No way am I coming out here and filling in a hole that size with permafrost in the snow, and I don’t think you’d want to do that yourself either, right?”
~~~
“Well I suppose let’s just make as much as we can of as much as we can,” Joseph chuckled a bit as he got right to work with bacon and scrambled eggs with cheese.  “How about you start by bringing down some of this fruit for the kids and give them each some brown sugar in their oatmeal to give it some flavor?”

~~~
Six blocks north and nine blocks west of the orphanage, one of Joseph’s sheriff deputies drove past what looked to be a light brown two-door BMW going in the opposite direction.  He didn’t think much of it until he glanced in his rear view mirror and saw the license plate number that he’d been told to watch for, realizing that only the car's hood and front bumper had been that brownish color, and the rest of the car was a dark orange.  He immediately flicked his lights and sirens on and braked, the snowy road allowing him to easily slide his Plymouth Satellite through a 180-turn before he sped up and tailgated the BMW, making sure that the driver wouldn’t be able to mistake his intent.
Helen smiled at the two engines as they came to a stop at the yard to get their caboose. "I got certified so we took a job today." She said happily. "I'm glad we got here at the same time."
Duck whistled a greeting with a smile, happy to see the other engine up and running now. He knew she hadn't been happy to be stuck in the shed.
~~~
Gus laughed and shook his head a little "No, I wouldn't want to do that right now, not with the ground frozen." He said, looking around at the destruction "That dynamite is stronger than I thought."
~~~
The girl nodded and grabbed a bowl for the fruit to take it down then the bag of brown sugar. She glanced to what he was cooking before leaving the room."
~~~
The car he was following stopped in a safe place and put the car in park, waiting on the officer to coem to the window.

(Getting really tired of the site just deciding to crash the page when I've been writing a reply for like an hour and I let it sit for like ten minutes to check something else before I was going to finish the post...)

Rosie smiled and said "Well how'bout that?  You go girl!  Now a couple kids showed up a few minutes ago saying something about Mr. Iverson called them and said they'd be the brake crew for a train heading northwest.  Had no idea what they were talking about, but we've had them helping a bit with the switching and coupling.  You'll probably wanna take Calvin, he's the Espee bay winda' van down there near Duck's train."

"Wow, thanks Rose, hopefully we'll see you guys later today as well," Connie said as she released Helen's brakes and eased the throttle back on to move forwards down the yard.  "Let's go grab our caboose and brake crew and head on up to Canada."

~~~
"Well like I said, if there's one thing we really know how to do in the US, it's blowing things up," Dirk said with a shrug as they headed back to get in Riley and head home again.
~~~
A few moments later Joseph would come down the stairs and set a stack of plates on the table with a lot of forks and table knives as well, then he went back upstairs and returned with a platter of cheesy scrambled eggs and bacon.

~~~
A moment later, after reporting the sighting and stopping of the suspect car to the other units, the deputy got out and made his way purposefully over to the driver's window.  Once the vehicle's occupant had opened the window, he firmly asked "Are you Matron Lisa Springfield?"
"Thanks Rosie, we'll see you guys later." Helen said. Even if they didn't see them on the tracks, they would see them at the yard most likely. She headed to get 'their' caboose so they could go after their freight.
~~~
Gus nodded and followed, glad to get back in Rigel to get some of the cold out again. "Home again, to ask the boss if he wants to bring in another engine this soon."
~~
The kids all stared at what Joseph had brought down, though none dared to come to get any, not even Alice was that brave. THey waited for permission to have a taste of that food.
~~~
The driver sighed and looked to the officer before shaking his head. "The matron sent me after some groceries while she tended to other things and you were all at the orphanage. Had me drop her off at her cousin's house and said she'd find her own way back."
