The Full Bucketniers RP (Open)

It's the year 1970, and the American railroad industry is modernizing at an incredible pace.  Steam locomotives as a species are being killed off in preference of more reliable and efficient diesel-electric locomotives.  Thousands of the old iron giants are being dragged off to scrap yards and smelting plants in long, ominous funeral trains, their eyes wide and pleading for help that will never come to any human they pass by on their way to their inevitable deaths.  To their old crews, these locos are family, but to the industry, they're now a liability, worth nothing more than their weight in scrap steel, at a rate of about forty seven dollars per metric ton.

In northern Washington State, trouble is brewing in the small railroad city of Fort Fairfax.  The local railroad company has been run out of business by the mega-tycoon that is the Union Pacific.  With the rail line shut down and deteriorating from years of disuse, the only way in and out of the valley was via the main 'highway', Route Seven, but on December 8th, 1970, heavy snow and ice caused a rock face in the mountains to collapse, completely burying three miles of Route Seven under millions of tons of granite boulders, snow, and ice near the town of Saint Josef.  Luckily only ten people were killed, but the road was rendered completely impassable, practically cutting off the entire valley of Bucket Falls from the outside world.  (There are other roads out of the valley, but Route Seven was the only one that was remotely safe in winter conditions, and the only route capable of supporting large trucks in any weather)  The only hope for Fort Fairfax, as well as the neighboring towns of Thomas Canyon, Josha's Cradle, Simonville, and Dunk Town, and the hamlet of Elena Junction, was reopening the old railroad.  The two main industries in the canyon, Dyken's Coal Mine and the Lena's Mineral Mining Company, were among the first to get onboard the bandwagon of reopening the line, followed closely by the Dunk Town Sawmill and Fort Fairfax Petrochemicals.  The companies could all theoretically survive through the winter by temporarily shutting down their operations to save capital, then reopening after the spring thaw would allow for Route Seven to be cleared and rebuilt, but in a rare stroke of plain humanity all four of the company CEOs decided that the railroad reopening would not only be good news for all of them, but more importantly, would be good news for all the people living in the valley.  With the support from the local industries and the residents of the valley, a group of citizens from Fort Fairfax formed the Full Bucket Line Preservation Society, which soon enough became the Full Bucket Line Railroad Company.  The initial investments from the industrial companies provided the FBLRR with most of the initial capital they needed to get most of the line repaired to the point of being safely usable, but that still left them with a rather serious problem.

What the hell good is a railroad with no locomotives and no rolling stock?

When the line was first shut down, the Union Pacific bought up everything worth recovering at the bankruptcy auction, which included all the locomotives and nearly all of the rolling stock.  There were a few cars left behind scattered around the line, but all needed serious work if they were even salvageable at all, and even all of them put together weren't going to be enough to run the railroad with.  Luckily most of the old railroad's employees were local residents, so there was no shortage of qualified workers, but the company was quickly running out of cash, and they still didn't even have any locomotives.

And so the search began for the trains that could help to save the valley of Bucket Falls.  For the size of the line they would be trying to run, starting off they would need at least one or two small locomotives for shunting work and pulling maintenance trains (probably small steam tank engines or diesel switchers), two or three mid-sized locos for general freight traffic and short, local passenger trains, and one large, powerful main-line locomotive for bringing the big freight trains in and out of the valley, as well as pulling the fast passenger services.  It's a tall order, but hopefully the folks at the FBLRR can find some of what they need without breaking the bank.

And hopefully the engines themselves will be willing to cooperate after being neglected and cast aside for so long.

Its the nature of time that the old ways must give in
Its the nature of time that the new ways come in sin
When the new meets the old it always ends the ancient ways
But as history told, the old ways go out in a blaze

~~~~~
Okay, so if you can't tell, this is a world where many of the vehicles that humans build and use are sentient beings, sort of like in "Thomas the Tank Engine" or "Cars" (if Cars had humans).  They have a fair bit of control over themselves, but still need human crew to fully operate most of the time.  They do have faces, but not Thomas-style faces where it covers most of the front of their body.  They're much less intrusive, being just eyes and a mouth somewhere that makes sense on the front of their body, like this:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
As sentient beings, they've all got their own personalities and feelings, most have names, they can feel pain and other physical sensations with surprising sensitivity.  Their bodies are a bit flexible, but not quite to the extent of the characters in "Cars".  When a locomotive and its crew are familiar with one another and have formed a tight bond, one can expect to see significantly better physical performance out of both.  The mental health of a sentient vehicle has a significant and direct impact on their physical capabilities, meaning a happy, satisfied train with a good crew that they're close to will tend to perform significantly better than their design specifications say they should be able to, while a depressed or angry locomotive or one with a crew that they're always at odds with will have substantially worse general performance, or may even straight-up refuse to work at all.
Please keep in mind for the vehicles that most of what the FBLRR is going to be using/getting their hands on is going to be old, outdated, and generally unwanted equipment.  Very little, if anything, is going to be new or modern (for the present time period of 1970) so try to keep to trains that were built between the 1940s and the early '60s, or were being retired from service in 1966 at the latest.  Trucks could probably be a bit newer, like '68 or '69 (giggity), but toss in some older ones as well for added historical nostalgia stuff.
Starr smiled at the kind voice on the other end "Yes, we will be getting there as soon as we safely can" She said in assurance then glanced around the room "We made a stop here because we think we are in the same place as some of your people, we just aren't sure which ones." She said, explaining the situation a bit.
~~
"I'm not worried about getting hurt" Helen said quietly. "I know you guys wouldn't hurt me on purpose, not after all this trouble to get us up and running." She paused then sighed. "It's no fun being tickled as a prank, not to me." There was probably a story there, but it wasn't something she wanted to discus.
~~~
Lilly chuckled and followed at a more sedate pace, looking to see if she could do anything to help get Rosie ready to go once more.

Roger tipped an imaginary hat to them all and headed out to make sure Corey didn't need any help finishing up and unhooking everything.

“Oh really, there are?”  Mr. Iverson asked in a bit of surprise.  “Oh, yes, that must be Dirk and Gus with Riley, of course.  They left to head up to Newton early this morning to investigate an old friend of Gus’ who might have had another locomotive we could try to acquire.  If they’re there, I’m sure they’d enjoy meeting you both.”  He went on to describe to the couple just what the two other men looked like, giving enough detail to be sure that they wouldn’t have a chance of not recognizing the right people.

~~~
“Oh, really?  I take it that’s something personal,” Julia said softly, resting a hand softly against the inside of Helen’s boiler.  “It’s alright, I’ll be sure to tell her that it makes you uncomfortable.  She’ll be sure to find more than enough other ways to be massively annoying.”
~~~
Connie shrugged and chuckled as she saw Lilly looking around for something else to do as she leaned back against Rosie’s side.  “Don’t stress yourself, Lilly, nothing we need to do for now but wait for 2400 gallons of diesel fuel to pump.  EMDs like her are really low-maintenance, and real easy to get going.  She’s basically just a really big diesel truck, honestly.”

~~~
Roger would almost bump into Corey at the door as the young man was on his way inside.  “Oh hey,” he chuckled.  “I actually just finished and got everything packed back up already.  You ready for those hot drinks?  Cause I’m freaking freezing.”
Starr smiled and looked to James again "Thank you sir, we will be in as soon as we can" She said gently then handed the phone to him so she could look around the place again.
~~
Helen gave a small smile at that caring response, glad for it. "Thank you" She said softly. She didn't care much about other pranks or annoyances like she did the tickling.
~~~
Lilly chuckled and stepped down then over to her "Should we bring a snack and drinks or anything?" She asked softly so the kids wouldn't overhear.
~~~
Roger smiled and moved to hold the door open so Corey could come in "I was coming to help you put it all away, I guess you beat me to it." He said then shrugged "Yeah, that sounds good."
“Excellent, I’m looking forward to meeting you both in person,” Mr. Iverson said before Start handed the phone back to her fiancé.  As she looked around she would quickly be able to spot the pair of their colleagues by Dirk's ridiculous head of red hair as their waitress was dealing with their bill with them.
~~~
Julia was quiet for a while as she simply monitored the progress of the melting ice, occasionally glancing outside to check on Scotty's progress with the cutting torch.  “So how long did you work on the Canadian Pacific for?” she eventually asked.  “And where did you do most of your service?  I mean yeah, CP used Hudsons like you as mixed traffic engines, but I can tell you were mostly for passenger service because they bothered to paint you nice rather than just leave you all black, right?”

~~~
“You know what, that’s a great idea, Lilly,” Connie said with a smile.  “We made sure to stock up the communal fridge and pantry before all the stores were empty, so there’s gotta be plenty of stuff.  Why don’t you go see what all there is exactly, then go ask the kids what they want.”  She chuckled a little and added “Since I already know what there is, just make me a hoagie with ham, turkey, cheddar, and add way more Tabasco than you think is healthy for a human to consume in one sitting, and that’ll do me just fine.”
~~~
When the two of them came back inside, Ashley was just walking up with a big, steaming mug in each hand and a smile on her face.  “Cider for you, Corey…” she said, handing one to him, then turning to hand the other one to Roger.  “And cocoa for you, Roger.”

Starr waited for him to end the call and hang up before she took his hand to walk over tot he table "Excuse me, are you two Dirk and Gus from the Full Bucket Line?" She asked gently to make sure before they went any further.
~~
"Right, I had a different name then. I was the Empress back then" Helen said softly, thinking of the past now. "I worked there for a very long time, I can't even remember when I started, but I ran passenger cars all over."

Scotty had finished the cutting, and was waiting for the metal to cool off. He had made a straight cut, ready to be put in the boiler and welded into place as a temporary fix.
~~~
Lilly chuckled and looked back in on the kids, calling them both to come with her to make a picnic basket for their supper to bring with them.
Cat grinned at that and made sure the blankets and pillows were in place before climbing down to help Lilly
~~~
"Thank you" Roger said, accepting his cup to take a sip of the warm liquid and make sure it wasn't too hot.

Dirk glanced up in a bit of surprise at hearing Starr address him and Gus by name, arching an eyebrow in curiosity.  “Uhh, yeah, that’s us… who might you be and how do you know us already?  I don’t think we’ve met before.”

~~~
“Well you could just as well be The Empress again, if you wanted to,” Julia said with a shrug.  “This is like a fresh start for you, and for all of us, really.”  She smiled as she glanced over at Scotty and saw that he had gotten the plate properly trimmed down and ready to attach, once the edges cooled sufficiently.  “Wow, Scotty sure is a quick worker.  It’s almost like he just unzipped the edges from that boiler plate, that’s pretty impressive.”
~~~
Nathan perked up and smiled at the mention of going to get food ready, quickly helping Cat to make sure everything was set up nicely, then eagerly going with her to help Lilly make their meals.

~~~
Ashley smiled and giggled a bit, almost deviously, as she watched Roger start drinking.  “Hehe, you know mom gave me something special to add to your drink, Roger…” she snickered, causing Corey to raise an eyebrow in curiosity and a bit of worry.
(I’m currently working on editing a version of the route map to visually include the approximate distances between each major point on the line, excluding the Dunk Town and Bucket Springs loops)
"No, we haven't met before." Starr said with a soft smile "I am Starr and this is Jim, He recognized Riley outside, so we made a call to the Full Bucket line, and found out who would be here. We are headed that way to start working." She explained.
~~~
Helen smiled a little "Connie would like that, I'm sure. She remembered when I ran under that name" She said then tried to look towards Scotty to see what she meant.

Scotty took off the safety helmet and glanced around, waving to Julia and Helen when he caught them looking at him. He turned the welder off nad got it settled to wait for the next time it was needed.
~~~
Lilly chuckled and went with the kids to get the supper made and packed in a basket to take with them and found thermoses to fill with drinks for each of them so they wouldn't go thirsty either.When they were done, they would head back to get those things settled in the cab.
~~~
Roger raised an eyebrow and looked at the drink then to her again.
(marshmallows?)

“Oh really?  You guys are the new help that I heard Mr. Iverson talking about?” Dirk said, a bit surprised, but pleasantly so as Jim came up to join them, standing by his love’s side.  “Ahh, so I take it you two are close, eh?” Dirk chuckled.  “You married?”

Jim laughed and leaned over to kiss Starr's cheek.  “Not yet, but hopefully we will be soon enough.  Been engaged for about eight months now, we’ve just been looking for a good place to settle down with some good, steady jobs before we tighten the knot.”

~~~
“Yeah, I can tell.  She gets a little sparkle in her eye whenever she looks at you,” Julia said happily, glancing over at Scotty and waving back to him.  “You’re intertwined with a lot of her childhood memories.  Hell, you might be the root reason that been so interested in trains since she was eight.  You’re super special to her, she’s going to be getting to fulfill a childhood dream by driving you, and you can bet your tender that she’s laid claim on your right seat once you’re up and running.”
~~~
By the time they returned to Rosie's bay, Connie would already have the diesel’s tanks full, the pumps turned off, and would be stowing the hoses back in the pumping station.  “Oh wow, great timing you three!” she said excitedly as she headed back up towards the F7's cab.  “You guys ready to try starting up two fifteen-hundred-horsepower engines for the first time in fourteen years?”

~~~
(Yeah, sure, let’s go with that…)
When he glanced down at his drink, Roger would see a generous helping of mini marshmallows floating around in the hot cocoa.  By the time he looked back up, Ashley would be bouncing away and giggling, almost out of sight already.
Corey laughed a bit as he drank and said “Man, that kid is a trip…”
Starr looked to Jim and smiled happily at him, glad to be with her fiance. "Yes, we are the new hires" She said, returning her attention to the two men as Gus saluted them with the bottle and said congratulations to them both before taking a short drink.
~~~
"She is enthusiastic" Helen agreed and chuckled softly "I think she will be a wonderful part of my crew." She added softly. She did like the young woman and hoped they could work together, no matter the name she used.
~~~
Lilly chuckled as the kids got settled with the basket in their places then nodded to Connie. "Let's get her started and on our way" She said excitedly.
~~
(What else would it be? ...You make me feel young and nieve, lol)
Roger smiled at the marshmallows and grinned "That she is." He agreed, tasting the cocoa to make sure nothing else had been added before he would drink more of it. She was a trickster after all, so it paid to be careful.
“Well it’s definitely nice to meet you two,” Dirk said with a smile, chuckling as he watched Gus’ drink salute.  “I’m sure it’ll be great working with you guys in the coming months, hopefully longer.  Where are you two lovebirds from?”
“Olympia,” Jim answered, smiling and returning Gus’ quick salute.  “Worked for the UP there and in Seattle for seven years, mostly doing shunting and short local freight deliveries.  Then one day I was working with a junior engineer doing some shunting, and I was being his spotter for a pretty normal hook up.  Then I slipped on a running board covered in clear ice at just the wrong time and crushed my foot in between the couplers as the trains came together.  When I got taken to the hospital in Seattle it was Starr here that was the head nurse assigned to me.  She was only seventeen at the time, at first just a pretty face for me to look at as she helped take a pile of hamburger meat and crushed bone held together by my socks and rebuild it into a functioning foot and ankle, and I would have been thankful enough just for that.  But then she continued to stick by my side all throughout my recovery, and when she kept checking up on me on the phone and in person even after I'd been discharged I knew there was some kind of deeper connection there.  It was almost three years before I was able to walk properly again, and we had already started dating by about the eighteen months point.  She put me back together both physically and emotionally, but by the time I was well enough to work again Union Pacific had gone ahead and fired me.  This job is gonna be an amazing second chance for us, and a great way for me to stick it to my old employers, you know?”
~~~
“Indeed she should be,” Julia agreed.  “Hey Scotty, are you really done already, or are you just pretending to be done so I’ll leave you alone?”

~~~
“My thoughts exactly,” Connie said with a smile.  “Lilly, how about to give your training a bit of a start, head back and turn on all the fuel pumps.  There’ll be four here and four in Rosie’s booster.  Once you’ve done that check the magnetos and make sure they’re working right, then come back up here and we’ll try and start her up together.
~~~
(Wouldn’t it be obvious?  The marshmallows were a distraction for the laxative she put in the cocoa, you doof, XD)
“She said that her mom gave her something to put in your drink…” Corey said speculatively as he drank his cider.  “But Ash knows where to get the marshmallows, and she just does it whenever she wants… If Connie wanted to flirt, which is what that sounded like, she’d have just made your drink herself and then probably thrown it at you from across the room… That kid is up to something…”

Starr smiled and nodded, looking to Jim again. "We are glad to have this chance to join your company and work with real trains." She said, though she figured she would be the doctor for the company, if they would allow that. That was more her calling than running trains or cooking.
~~~
"Yeah, I'm done with this, just letting it cool" Scotty replied with a chuckle.
~~~
Lilly listened to her then nodded and bit her lip a little nervously as she went to do as she said. First things first, that was starting the pumps both on the engine then the booster. Next was checking the magenetos and see if they were working right. When she saw they were, she headed back to the cab so they could try to start Rosie.
~~~
Roger frowned and looked in the cup then to Corey again. "Surely she wouldn't do something that would make someone unable to work, right?" He hoped the marshmallows were all that was in it. He sighed and headed for the kitchen anyway.
“And I’m sure we’ll be glad to have you,” Dirk said with a smile.  “So a doctor and a railroad engineer, huh?  Seems like an unusual pairing, but I’m not one to judge others for their love interests.  When we all get there I’d love to help introduce you to the rest of the crew.”
~~~
“Alright, I guess I’ll let that slide then,” Julia teased.  “So where is it that you came from, Scotty?  You’re definitely not a local like most of us are.”

~~~
“Got got everything ready back there?” Connie asked, smiling at the affirmative nod she received in reply.  “Fantastic!  Let’s get this party started, shall we?”  With that the blonde stood and headed to the panel on the back wall, then held down the large red “START” button with her thumb.
Rosie coughed and sputtered as her long-idle starter motor whirred slowly to life, spinning helplessly for a solid minute before Connie let the pressure off.  “Come on Rosie, I just need a little fire, that’s all…” she mumbled to herself as she waited a moment, then held the button down again.  After another moment the sound changed and Rosie's big diesel motor began pounding hard, gasping for air as the frigid block impeded the combustion process.  Dirty, oily smoke puffed from her exhaust fans in her roof, but one by one her pistons gradually began firing like they were meant to.  Each one more that started to behave itself helped to push the remaining pistons into shape, and eventually there was a mighty roar as the last five all began firing properly at the same time.  Her engine RPMs revved up high for a moment both in triumph and to help warm her engine block up to a stable operating temperature before she finally settled back down, her and her motor both purring in content.  “There we go, attagirl!” Connie said ecstatically, monitoring the way that her engine was running for a moment before leaving Lilly to watch that while she got the B unit started.
~~~
“I’m not so sure, you know Ashley,” Corey shrugged.  “She’s become as much her mother’s daughter as she can without being genetically related to her, so its definitely possible that she might have put something in your drink that would keep you off the roster for a little while.  Probably not more than a whole day, though, she does limit herself.”

"Right" Gus said and looked to the new pair. "Did you want to eat, or should we head out now?" He asked, glancing back to Dirk after that question.
~~~
"Originally Scotland" Scotty said and grinned then shrugged "I've traveled quite a bit since then, but that's where I was born."
~~~
Cat listened and watched this process, giving a cheer when the engine turned over and ran properly. This was exciting to be here for this part, the first starting in so long. She grinned at Connie then at Lilly before looking to Nathan
~~~
Roger sighed and looked around the kitchen as they walked in, making sure they were alone before pouring out that cup and washing it then finding the cocoa to make a fresh cup for himself. Yeah, couldn't be too careful.
"I'd be fine with just heading back now," Dirk said with a shrug.  "As long as that's okay with you guys as well."
"Yeah, we already ate before we got here, so I think we'll be alright," Jim agreed easily.  "That alright with you, dear?"
~~~
"Ahh, so that would explain the thick accent and all," Julia laughed.  "I've got a bit of the same story myself; born and raised in Japan then immigrated here in the sixties with my parents.  Found a job working machinery and I've been here ever since.  These Americans sure do pay top dollar for anyone good with a welding torch and a forge, I'll tell you that much."

~~~
A moment of those same sort of sounds later, Rosie's B unit could be heard roaring to life as well, bringing an even wider smile to Nathan's face.  Shortly afterwards Connie reappeared and she quickly sat down in the right-hand seat in the diesel's cab.  "Alright, you guys ready to go?" she asked excitedly as she got everything ready for them to leave.  Ben had already come out to open Rosie's bay door for them, then gone outside to get all the switches set up properly for them to head to the main line out towards the crossroads at Simonville.  Getting a nod from everyone she gave two short, sharp toots on the horn, then released the brakes, set the reverser forwards, and eased the throttle into notch one.
Rosie's motors groaned for a moment in protest to the higher RPMs that were being demanded of them, but this was surely just because the engine blocks were still very cold and hadn't "found their groove" yet.  Slowly but surely the F7 started rolling out of the sheds into the late morning sun.  "Oh man... it feels so good to finally get moving again..." Rosie said, her bell clanging in a steady rhythm as they headed out towards the exit of the yards.
~~~
"Yeah, good thinking..." Corey said, pouring out his own mug as well and going about the process of making some more hot cider.  In reality, he'd been safe; Ashley hadn't targeted him--this time at least.  For Gus, however, he'd already gotten enough of the laxative in his system that in about 20 minutes he'd start getting hit by a pretty powerful round of diarrhea.  Unfortunately for him, Ashley had locked the doors to the bathrooms and taken the key.  He would be able to eventually find her sitting in a chair by the bathrooms, reading a book and calmly waiting for his inevitable and panicked arrival.

"That's fine with me" Starr said with a chuckle as she looked from one male to the other.

Gus nodded and finished the bottle off before standing. "Right, let's head out then" He said with a small nod.
~~~
"Aye, that they do" Scotty said with a chuckle "Though sometimes I play the accent up and other times it just deepens on it's own when I get excited or something."
~~~
Cat grinned and clapped, trying not to jump around in her excitement of having Rosie moving under her own power again. This was incredible and she wouldn't forget this no matter what happened in the future.

Lilly grinned and took her seat too, waving out the window at the people watching them leave then settling in for the ride
~~~
"Not funny" Roger said as he found her near the bathroom. He held his hand out "Where's the key?"
“Alright, sounds good to me,” Dirk said with a smile as he left his part of the bill and his tip on the table and stood to head back outside.
Jim gently took Starr’s hand and began heading back out to JT as well.  “Almost there at last…”
~~~
“Yeah, I never really developed an accent in my English,” Julia said with a shrug.  “I’ve basically just always sounded like everyone around here, even before we moved.  Seems weird, especially since my parents weren’t US citizens until we immigrated.”

~~~
“Alright, so… we’ve got about a hundred and fifty or so miles to go each way,” Connie said, waving to Ben as the group passed by him and headed out to the main line.  “So… it should be a little over two hours getting there, maybe three if we decide we want to take it easy on Rosie on her first run.  Not sure how long it’ll take us to get the consist sorted up at Dyken’s, so that’s open to speculation.  Then the return trip should take about as long as the trip there, so… I’d say this should fall somewhere between a four-and-a-half-hour and an eight-hour adventure.  Even so, I’m certain there’s no reason we couldn’t make a stop in Simonville on the way back if anyone gets hungry again.”  She laughed a bit as Rosie’s exterior running lights and her headlights came on as a safety precaution.  “I mean, I’m pretty much always hungry, so I think we just might be stopping anyways.”
“I’m just glad that Miss Rosie is running again,” Nathan said happily, his face practically glued to the windows as he watched the outside world flowing past them with wide, wonderous eyes.
~~~
Ashley glanced up casually, trying hard to suppress her wild snickering as she looked over Roger.  “Ohh, you want to use the can?” she asked cheekily, holding out her own hand to him and adding “Ten bucks for the key, take it or leave it.”

Gus paid his part then headed out after Dirk to get in Riley for the ride home. He wasn't drunk, but he was pleasantly able to not think about that morning.

Starr took Jim's hand and smiled at him before they walked out to get in their truck again.
~~~
Scotty chuckled at that "You never developed yours, I never could get rid of mine." He said and shook his head at the way they were opposites.
~~~
Cat giggled at the rendition, more at the 'we might stop anyway' part than the others. She was excited and soon joined Nathan at the window to look out over the snow covered ground. She was glad they were safe and warm inside the train right now.
~~~
"Well, if you would rather see the results of your prank out here...?" Roger threatened, lowering his hand to his belt, though he would never really disrobe in front of the girl. He raised an eyebrow, checkmate. He didn't have a ten on him anyway, not that he would allow that kind of extortion to become a practice here.
“You guys can follow us and Riley back to Saint Josef's,” Dirk said as they headed back outside to rejoin the vehicles again, himself climbing up to get into Riley’s cab.  “And once we’ve gotten that far we can work on finding a road that we can navigate with you guys to bypass the avalanche zone.”
“Yeah, I think that would be preferable,” Jim laughed as he opened Starr’s door for her, then once she had gotten in, went around to climb into JT's driver seat.
~~~
“Yeah, isn’t that funny?” Julia laughed as she watched Rosie's lights disappear into the distance.  “Man, we're really gonna do this, aren’t we?”

~~~
“Well I’m up for leaning a little heavy on the gas, if you guys are,” Rosie said, shrugging her side plates a little as they rolled along, feeling overjoyed that she was rolling smoothly and under her own power.
“Yeah, I’m good with that, what about you guys?” Connie agreed.  “You wanna take her up to sixty-five?  I think we can save going up to seventy-five for her first passenger run, but no reason to slack off much for now, right?”
~~~
“Hmmm… well I know you’re too good to actually do something like that, and you like my mom too much…” Ashley said deviously.  She had him figured out, the slick little scoundrel, and she let him wait there for a good minute before she finally rolled her eyes and tossed the key towards him.  “Alright, fine, I guess you’ve suffered enough.  Have fun in there,” she cackled as she grabbed her book and strolled away, likely already planning her next victim.

Starr smiled at Jim then got buckled for the ride. She was excited to be going to the company finally, and meeting the others.

Gus got in and buckled for the trip too, closing his eyes and leaning on the door for now.
~~~
Scott you looked to the lights going away before he nodded. "We are, we will." He said quietly.  He went over to help close the door so they didn't loose too much heat in there.
~~~
Cat grinned and nodded. "I want to go faster, if it's safe to." She agreed and looked back out the window.

Lilly chuckled softly then shrugged, watching the gauges for any sign of strain. She didn't mind either way, so long as they didn't mess Rosie up.
~~~
Roger caught the key and quickly vanished inside. He was glad he had only taken a sip of her mixed drink or this would be worse.
Jim leaned over and softly kissed Starr on the cheek, then started up JT’s engine and easily pulled away from the curb, only to pull back over a little farther down the street.  He mostly just wanted to move out of the way so that Riley would have more than enough room to easily and safely pull out of his parking space, then he would pull back in behind them to follow as they headed back towards Fort Fairfax.
“Yeah, you go right ahead and rest up, Gus,” Dirk said in understanding as he shut Riley’s driver’s door and started up the truck’s engine.  “I’ll wake you if and when anything interesting happens.”  He glanced back and watched as the other trio pulled out from behind them, then pulled over and stopped a short distance ahead.  He smiled at the act of courtesy and easily pulled back, then out away from the curb and started driving, with Jim, Starr, and JT following right behind them.
(You want to drop this group for a while?  Just because it’s still at most early afternoon for everyone else and they’ve got a fair bit of driving ahead of them)
~~~
Julia smiled confidently as she made her way over to help close the bay door as well, then clambered back up onto Helen’s front running board and into her front boiler chamber to resume monitoring the progress of melting the ice in her boiler.  “Oh good, glad this is coming along nicely,” she said with a smile as she started working on removing the bit of melted water that had started to accumulate in the bottom of Helen’s boiler.

~~~
“Alright then, let’s get this party really started,” Connie said eagerly, her left hand gently holding the brake lever as she gradually advanced the throttle from notch three to notch six.  Rosie’s motors revved up a bit stronger as she accelerated up from thirty-five miles per hour.  The scenery outside started rushing past them faster and faster as Rosie’s speedometer advanced up to about sixty-seven miles per hour.  “Looking good, Rosie,” Connie said, smiling as she glanced over at Lilly to make sure she was watching and learning from this experience.
“Wow, this is so cool Kat…” Nathan said excitedly as he kept watching outside.  “We’re going so fast, this is even more amazing than I ever thought it would be!”
(Sure, they can diadem to drive, lol)
~~~
Helen smiled the chuckled "The warmth feels great too." She said gently. She was glad that ice was melting out finally.

Scotty came over to peek in and see how it was going. "Anything I can do to help here?" He asked curiously.
~~~
Cat nodded and grinned at him. "Yeah, it is" She agreed cheerfully. She looked over to Connie and Lilly , watching what they did because she wanted to know too.
Lilly was watching what Connie did carefully. She didn't want to mess up if she ever had to do this herself.
"Yeah, I'm sure it does Helen," Julia chuckled as she glanced back to Scotty and scratched her chin a bit.  "Hmm... well actually maybe you could monitor this process for me and I can get back to my workshop and continue building Sam's replacement parts."
~~~
"I take it you're interested too, right Cat?" Connie chuckled.  "Alright then, how about a pop quiz for the both of you.  If the Airbrake system fails, what are your three backup braking systems in the order that they should be used in?" she asked, looking for the answer of dynamic brakes, independent brakes, and manual handbrakes, but not really expecting either of them to get the answer completely right.

Scotty smiled and nodded "I can do that easily." He said happily. It would help to get the jobs done quicker after all.
~~~
Cat flushed and nodded, moving to stand behind the seats. She frowned at the question though, uncertain of what the answer was.
"Dynamic brakes." Lilly answered the first easily then had to think about the next one. "Independent would be next."
"Hand brakes are the last one." Cat said, she knew that one from growing up in the cars.
“Alright, if you’re good with taking care of that, then I’ll leave you to it,” Julie said as she got down and started heading towards her workshop behind where the locomotives parked.  “Just be careful with Connie’s engine though.  If you break something…”  She chuckled a bit and added “Well let’s just say she’s really possessive and protective of her locos is all… I’ll get out of your hair though, good luck.”
~~~
“Alright, that’s correct you two,” Connie said as they rode, Rosie’s new axle gliding smoothly along beneath them.  “Though I would say you both should work on knowing all of that yourselves.  Hmm… let’s see… When is it *not* appropriate to use the headlights and exterior running lights on a locomotive?”

"I would never hurt an engine on purpose" Scotty said as he settled in to watch the ice melt down. He wasn't going to let Helen get hurt if he could help it.
~~~
"I know the manual brakes, cause dad showed them to me and told me about them" Cat said softly. At then new question she chuckled softly. "When the engine is in their shed, sleeping." She replied, joking a little.
"They should be on whenever the engine is in use." Lilly said softly.
“Oh I’m sure you wouldn’t, but accidents can happen, so just be careful is all I’m saying,” Julia added before disappearing into the back of the shop.
“So we’ve got a Scot named Scotty now, huh?” Sam chuckled as she watched what he and Helen were working on as well as she was able.  “Man, that’s funny, this fledgling railroad is becoming a real smorgasbord of nationalities and backgrounds, isn’t it?”
~~~
Connie and Rosie both laughed a bit at that and the diesel said “Yeah, I agree, that would get pretty annoying and drain my batteries too.”

“Yeah, exactly right, both of you,” Connie said contently.  “Even in the middle of the day, if you’re operating the train, you have all the lights on.  Hmm… how about you guys list off some of the basic horn and whistle patterns for me?  Whatever ones you guys know.”
