The Universe is in ruin. The Romulan and Reman homeworlds are destroyed hulks. Emperess Sela continues her war in the shadows to reclaim what the Romulans once had. The Klingon Empire, now ruled by Martok of House Qavok, has maintained the dissolution of the Klingon-Federation alliance begun by J'mpok.
The Borg have been beaten back, once again, at great cost.
The Dominion rests on the far side of the DS9 wormhole like a waiting landmine.

This... is the shattered, on a razor's edge, galaxy patrolled by the crew of the USS Khonsu, NCC-9602A. Their dangerous mission: Maintain, through gunboat diplomacy, the tenuous peace within the region now called "The Corridor" where Klingon, Federation, and Romulan space collide.

Lt. Leonard R. "Trigger" Kipling watched out the window as the shuttle Anton slid through space toward the drydock orbiting Earth.

"There she is, Sir. The Khonsu-A. Different from your last post, eh?"

Trigger looked at the pilot out of the corner of his eye. "Yeah, different; and yet, somehow, the same. Oh, Chief, the Khonsu is a he, like the ships of old Terran Russia."
The Chief Petty Officer blinked, "Oh. Sorry, Sir."

Kipling patted the man on the shoulder and smiled. "No need for apologies, Chief; everyone does it for the first six weeks. I know I had trouble adjusting myself."

After a long moment, Lt. Kipling left his seat to get his things. He'd been one of the last officers assigned to the original Khonsu four years before. He'd been there, on the front lines of the Dominion War, five years ago; he wasn't particularly looking forward to going back, not after his last post had gone the way of his inaugural ship, no thanks to a Tal Shiar saboteur.

He still bore those particular scars.

The USS Pavlov had been a good ship, a good crew. Lt. Kipling had not only been First Officer, he'd earned his nom de guerre, "Trigger". He still thought they'd been swept under the rug by Starfleet; a black mark, on his career. The late Cpt. Matthews had been ordered into that sector, and Starfleet had seemingly wanted to blame him for the loss of the Pavlov. Trigger had been interrogated and placed under house-arrest for six months. Then, a personal miracle had occurred: he'd been assigned to the Khonsu.

Trigger shook his head at the memory. He'd had no uniforms, no official privileges of rank, not even a valid security clearance-code. Captain (Col. SFMC) Yeager had given them to him, despite Kipling's unseen scars. Kipling still didn't know if he'd proven to Col. Yeager that Trigger deserved them. Here he was, three months after the Khonsu had been destroyed, facing the fact he, Leonard Rudyard "Trigger" Kipling, two-time veteran, Tactical Officer, and PTSD sufferer, was to be the very first officer aboard the second Khonsu.

The ship was a new science variant of the Gryphon-class battle-escort. She had four torpedo tubes(two fore, two aft), 25 omni-directional phaser banks, eight twin-barrel cannons with 270* firing arcs, labs for just about every imaginable science, and a sensor suite that would have made a Voyager-class cream itself with envy. Kipling knew the ship's mission was one of discovery/diplomacy/peace-keeping, but the USS Khonsu was indubitably an intelligence-gathering warship.

The Khonsu would, once fully crewed, boast a compliment of 200 StarFleet Marines, fifty elite Marine Sabres, and 500 other crewmen. No families were allowed on Khonsu; his mission was too dangerous.

The ship was empty, quiet. The only sound was that of the transporter beam shimmering softly as Trigger beamed aboard on the Main Bridge -- his request. He looked around and stepped to his Tactical console on the Bridge.

"Computer, this is Tactical Lieutenant Leonard R. Trigger Kipling, Clearance 9er-283-dash-725-Lima-Romeo-Kilo-Tactical-1. Open Operations."

Bridge console hummed and glowed softly to life.

"Computer, initialize Library Computer Access Phontonic, Main."

A hologram of a tall, statuesque man appeared. Kipling blinked. This particular LCA-P looked more like Yul Brynor, instead of the one he'd gotten used to on the previous Khonsu. "He" was also dressed like Brynor's best-known performance, Rameses III.

The hologram inclined its head, and said in the late actor's voice, "Welcome aboard the USS Khonsu-A, Captain. I am Khon, LCAP (Main) of this ship. How may I be of service?"
Trigger grimaced at the field-promotion. He hoped and prayed it was only temporary. "Primary Task -Alpha- Khon: Initialize all ship's systems; Primary Task -Bravo: I want a Preliminary Readiness Report routed to my PADD within three hours. Secondary Task: run a Level-5 deep scan of all systems. Tertiary Task: I want a list of the Senior Officers assigned this vessel. Carry on."

Kipling walked the corridors of his new home. Everything was spotless -- the clean of a virgin ship neither staffed nor bloodied. God forbid this ship actually be called upon to fire salvos in anger.

The doors of Sick Bay opened, and Kipling did a double-take. Yes, he was a fan of Old Terra cinema, but this... The Emergency Medical Photonic looked just like Deborah Paget from her role as the house servant of the Master Builder in Cecil deMille's The Ten Commandments.

"Hello, Lt. Kipling. I am Su, Emergency Medical Photonic."

Kipling smiled and inclined his head in respect. "Su, I'm about to pose an inquiry of possibly personal nature. As the second incarnation of LCAP-Medical, are you by chance married to Khon, LCAP-Main?"

Su nodded and her outfit shifted to the more familiar medical blues, with a Caduceus instead of pips. "I am. You remembered."

"Khenes wouldn't happen to be about, would he?" Kipling referred to Su and Khon's "father", the computer core's Keeper.

"No, he's still sleeping for the moment. Do you need his assistance for something?"

"No," Kipling replied. "Thank you. The holo-emitters have been initialized and deep-scanned, correct?"

Su seemed to think a moment, then replied, "Only through the first five decks, Lieutenant."

"Ah. Carry on."

Khenes woke slowly. Someone was attemping to either get his attention, or code into the Core. He materialized in a shimmer of photons in the Security Office a few feet from the desk.

"Trigger" Kipling looked up from his PADD and the graphics on the Security desk. "Hello, Khenes. I'd say it is a pleasure to see you, but we both know that's a hollow gesture of courtesy."

"Indeed," the photonic replied.

Khenes was dressed in a black suit of body armor that vaguely looked like the MJOLNIR MkV power armor from the series of Halo games that Kipling still enjoyed. Khenes' visage was one of a stern man in his late 60s, with a shock of white hair, small wire-frame glasses, and soulless, black eyes that reminded Trigger of a Terran shark's as they had no white, no pupil, no iris.

"I presume you wished my attention." The observation was an accusatory statement, rather than a question.

"I did," Lt. Kipling replied. "Khon has finished the warm-up of all ship's systems, but informs me that I have to request you perform the level five scan I have requested."

"I do, yes. Why do you need such a scan, Lieutenant?"

Kipling stood. "Because of the backdoor created by the so-called 'patch' the Tal-Shiar gave the original Khonsu. I have lost two assignments to destruction now, and I aim to see this one does not make me look like a Jonah. Is that reason enough for you, Sir?"

Khenes sneered. "Unlike my so-called 'children', I'm an actual life form. My code for the Khonsu-A's computer is likewise organic."

Kipling nodded. "[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]?"

Khenes nodded, appreciating the lieutenant's research. "Neither, although I could see how you would think of those particular 'civilizations'. I am a photonic lifeform from a planet that is actually at the very event horizon of the Bajoran Wormhole. Your former roommate, Starfleet Sabre Major Bvaric, is from a planet about ten hours away at Warp 5."

Kipling nodded, and asked, "Why not have three of your people aboard the ship?"

Khenes sighed in chagrin at the question. "I requested asylum from the Federation. As you have, I earned my place aboard a starship."

Kipling nodded, noting the tone of the reply. "Ah. Thank you." After a moment of consideration, the human asked, "Am I dismissed, Sir?"

"Yes, you are." Khenes vanished.

Captain Emily Carver stepped into the starboard airlock of the USS Khonsu-A. Su met her.
"Name, rank, service number?" the Med-Holo asked.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
"Carver, Emily J., Captain -- Khonsu-A," Carver replied, stating her service number.
Su nodded and produced a hypospray. "Acting-Captain "Trigger" Kipling was tested as per procedure; I must request the same of you."
Carver nodded and the test was negative for Founder/Changling. Carver blinked. "Is Acting-Captain "Trigger" Kipling aware I'm now in command?"
Su gave Cpt. Carver an icy look. "That protocol can only be enacted face-to-face as per StarFleet Regulatio-"
"Where is Acting-Captain Kipling?"
"Deck Nine, Section Three: Security."
"Show me."
