The location for the new human settlement could not have been better. Fertile land nestled in small river valley with plenty of standing timber to provide building material and open fields for herds of livestock to graze. Over the past few months, over 3 dozen wagons had arrived to help settle the land. And all seemed well.

Occasionally, scouts were sent into the surrounding countryside to explore and to ensure there was no danger. But the scouts consistently reported that the land was quiet. And it wasn't until autumn that trouble came.

Just an instant before Orkhan broke down the door, Leona darted into her parent's room. She reached their bedside, running straight into her mother as she was flying from bed at the orc's terrifying roar.

"Oh, Leonara!" Aldreda started, panicked and confused, but relieved to find her daughter in her arms, "What is-" she suddenly began to cough violently, the thick smoke now pouring through the door to the room.
"Mum, the house is on fire!" Leona gasped, her normally soft, light voice now hoarse and weak, though her inner strangth was behind it.
"Orcs..." A deep, biting voice growled. It was Brawley, her father.
"What?!" Leona was shoked. She had never even seen one, as they had suposidly been driven from the lands long ago. She could hear him moving rapidly about as he quickly took something from the dresser, then moved to the door.
"Both of you, go out the back door and head for the river. Now!" Brawley barked, pulling his long sword from its scabbard now strapped to his hip over his nightclothes. He was long retired from his days of survice in the fight against the Orcs. In his youth, he had fought the foul creatures for these very lands, and he had been well known for his fighting skill and his lion's heart, but was now much older, and the years had not been that kind. Never the less, the flaxen haired bear of a man was still strong and ready for a fight.

Holding his sword at the ready, he stepped briskly out into the hall. The sight of Orkhan, with the torch light illuminating his wretched features, seemed to invigorate the old warrior in Brawley, and he charged forward at the beast, swinging the sword to strike as a hate filled war roar of his own rose in his throat.

Leona could hear the bell now, loud and ominous as screams rent the air stormy night air. Without pause, she obeyed her father, pulling her frantic mother out of the room and racing to the back door.

Draughnot and the second wave of orcs were closely following Orkhan in the first wave, except instead of torches they were carrying swords. The first wave was supposed to light the fires and cause the chaos, while the second wave followed up to capture the fleeing people. Several of them were dragging heavy chains behind them with ankle shackles attached to hold their prisoners until the siege was finished.

Leonara pulled her mother roughly by the hand out the back door, grabbing her satchel from a hook on the way out. She raced through the small garden and started swiftly down the grassy slope towards the river as her father had instructed.

"Mother, quiet!" Leona warned in a hushed tone, fear bringing a quiver to her voice. But her mother did not hear her.
"No, No!" Aldreda cried out, part of their home's roof falling in and flames leaping up in glee to devour the next section as she wailed, "Brawley! BRAWLEY!"
"No! Mother, we can not-" Leona started, but suddenly her mother's hand was no-longer in hers, and the distraught woman was running back up the slope, her cries of anguish loud enough to be heard over the roar of the fires and the blustering wind.

---

A moment earlier, Olgregda looked up from her latest kill, pulling her sword slowly from the old woman's stomach who lay dying, trapped under her foot as she spotted, through the space between two homes, two females escaping down the slope towards the river. "Draughnot!" She called to the other orc coming past in the rough orc tongue, excitement lifting her tone, "Draughnot! Some are escaping!"

Draugnot heard someone shout his voice as he finished securing the ankles of two prisoners to the length of chain that had been laid out. It took him a couple of seconds to see Olgregda in the smokey darkness, but at the same time he caught a glimpse of Aldreda running back up towards the burning house. He knew that the women had not seen him yet, and he was in nearly a perfect spot to position himself between her and the house. She would run right to him... it was too easy.

His dark skin and armor helped him blend in as he slunk towards the top of the slope where she was heading. When she reached the top, he was ready to backhand her across the head with the hilt of his sword.

Not successfully at least, with his breath labored and he muscles screaming from lack of oxygen.

The swing of his blade sent it into the side of the orc's torch, splinters flying in all directions as it was chopped in half, the fiery front end falling to the ground between the adversaries. The vibration from the blow as he struck the wood of the torch loosened Brawley's grip on the long sword and it flue from is grasp, only to clatter to the floor just on the other side of the flames now starting to spread low from the chopped-off torch head between them.

Brawley could see over his shoulder that the back door was open wide, meaning that his family had escaped. This gave him an odd sense of calm. He snarled gently, out of breath and choking on the smoke filled air. Even with the front and back doors open, creating a draw which pulled cold wind through in a rush, the smoke and heat were still stifling as the flames were fanned.

Without pause, he lunged for his sword, one hand reaching for the blade through the flames.

During the split second that Brawley spent looking at the back door thinking of his family, Orkhan lunged towards the fallen sword--half a second ahead of the man. However, instead of trying to reach down and grab it--and risk burning his face in the flames--he planted his foot on the weapon and pinned it to the floor. His legs were better protected from the flames than his arms, and even he was starting to feel the affects of the smoke--this battle could not go on much longer.

As Brawley came towards him he thrust his arm forward, aiming to wrap his huge hand around the man's neck to capture him.

As Brawley came towards him he thrust his arm forward, aiming to wrap his huge hand around the man's neck to capture him.

Orkhan's hand missed by a mere half inch as Brawley ducked. His hands reached the blade of the sword, but he recoiled as the low flames licked at his skin and he saw the orc's heavy foot placed on the hilt just on the other side of the flames. It was then that, in a desperate attempt to drive the beast back, he snatched up the severed top half of the orc's torch which lay just to his right, the head of it engulfed in fire.

Swinging the blazing length of wood in the direction of the orc, he scrambled back, still hefting the burning torch in an arc before him to something, anything, between him and the foul creature.

"I will NOT submit to you, you filthy ANIMAL!" He spat through the thick smoke choking him, his limbs shaking with fatigue. If it wasn't to be the orc that would kill him, it would surely be the smoke to do the deed. He wouldn't last much longer either way.

Orkhan did not rush to attack Brawley right away as the man had backed away several steps and was not an immediate threat. Instead, he moved Brawley's sword closer to himself with his foot and picked it up. The metal was searing hot and he nearly dropped it, but managed to hold on--although he grimaced as he thought about what his hand might look like tomorrow.

"Human..." He barked in response with a crooked grin. "Camden already has."

The smoke and flames had grown to an intolerable level at this point, even for him. They had the whole night to ransack the town and he didn't want to be too weakened to continue after only one house. Although Brawley had the torch, Orkhan decided that he would rather take his chances with that than risk the entire structure collapsing on him. He advanced at a brisk walk towards Brawley, heading for the back door that his family had departed him. He would kill the man outside.

Verena bowed slightly, smiled humbly, and backed away, picking up the tray before leaving.

Anwir stuck a fork into his own pie and took a bite of the delicious thing with its delicate, buttery crust, then replied to David after swallowing, "You may be right. The storm has probably reached Camden by now." The storm... He laughed inwardly. The storm of blood-thirsty orcs, or the dark clouds? I am imagining- both!

Berthold was starting to get slightly worried, having heard the men- one of them his employer -speak of the mining town again. He and his family were only ever informed by Anwir of what they needed to know. But two of his eldest sons, Berwald and Benedek, lived in the mountain town, and another two, the younger twins Bernadotte and Bernhard, were picking up supplies. "Did I hear yee sayin' somethin' 'bout warnin' Camden earlier? Warn them of what?" He asked conversationally, but he couldn't completely hide his concern.
"We have been informed of an orc hoard that plans to attack the towns around here" David replied, glancing up from his pie "We are uncertain of which town they will attack first, so we were sent to warn Camden while others have been sent to the other villages. You should be on alert here as well" He fell silent again, looking towards the window with a sigh.

"A-an orc hoard?!" Berthold repeated with a soft gasp. His eyes glanced momentarily to Anwir for an answer, but the scowl which flash across the man's eyes warned against it.

"Yes. Charles escaped from the beasts and warned his fellow men in Aberdeen-" Anwir explained, nodding to Charles. The other man fidgeted slightly, but stayed quiet. "...then David here and another of Lord Ragnar's men set out to spread the news to the other settlements. That is when I joined them at Wedmor." Anwir finished, giving the innkeeper a grim smile.

He was feeling oddly tired now though he didn't want to be. He didn't know why he was sleepy as he pushed the empty bowl away and looked to the window again. He propped his chin on his fist and watched the storm while he thought.

He held back the growl that had formed in his throat in an effort to be quiet, and bridged the gap in between them with several quick strides...

Sword in hand, he aimed to drive it square into Aldreda's chest as Leona tried to pull her away. He figured that she was too whiny and weak to make a good slave anyways.

Aldreda sensed more than heard the movement behind them, and instinctively, she looked back. She just managed to cry "No!" and turn to face the shadowy beast, placing herself between Draugnot and Leonara, before the heavy blade slid with a sickening slick between her fifth and sixth ribs, shattering the latter on entry. Her breath left her as she collapse.

Leona screamed. Her mother's hand went slack and slipped from hers. Blood, hot and silky, splattered her and the ground among the heavy rain drops. She tried in vain to get to Aldreda's side, to save her, but her bare feet slipped on the grass and caused her to fall, tumbling a ways down the slope. Her satchel flew from her shoulder and came to rest further down the hill.

ChickieBooBoo wrote:Ghamorz was part of the second attack wave, tasked with retrieving as many humans as possible. A older orc, she was a veteran of war and did not hesitate to dispatch those who got in her way. Already, a death toll of two "heroic" men stained the grass behind her.

A few paces ahead of her, Tobias was stumbling out of a burning house was his hand clamped tightly over his mouth. The miner had just spent the last ten minutes freeing a small child from the collapsed wreckage. The child had run off with his family but Tobias, suffering from smoke inhalation, barely managed to make it outside--and even then was coughing so badly that it caught the attention of Ghamorz.

The hunting orc found Tobias quickly as the sound of him coughing was loud. In one hand she was carrying a formidable looking sword, and with the other hand she rocked the laboring miner in the gut so hard he flew backwards--landing hard on his back about four feet from where he had originally stood. It was then that he seen Morell running past them, although in the smoke he knew that the other man hadn't seen them yet. "Morell..." His call for help was weak at first, but he managed to gain enough strength to shout a second time. "Morell! Help!"

Morell stopped mid-step. He thought that he'd heard something, then it came again, and he could just make out through the utter chaos around that someone had called his name. Sharply, he turnedgaze catching immediately on Tobias' prone figure and the orc who'd put him in peril. His eyes were wide and wild.

He began quickly towards Tobias, but only got a few steps as Leona's high scream rent the air. His head snapped around, suddenly shaking with terror. He looked back to Tobias, but he was starting to back away, shaking his head slowly. There was remorse in his eyes. He was going to leave Tobias to his fate, and even though he knew it was unthinkable- something that he would never be able to forgive himself for, everything in his being told him to leave the man. Leona must be saved.

Morell turned away from Tobias and began to run, guilt already tearing at his insides as he abandoned a man that he had known since he could remember... It's not like we were friends. We were never close. Really, we hated each other! Why should I care? Leona... that's who I need to help. He began to justify his actions, but it was too much. They were all right about me... I'm evil... I'm a monster. This is wrong. But... it must be done. I'm so sorry.

David nodded, confirming his story then sighed again and finished his food. "But, as I said, it seems we will be needing a room until this storm clears." He was feeling oddly tired now though he didn't want to be. He didn't know why he was sleepy as he pushed the empty bowl away and looked to the window again. He propped his chin on his fist and watched the storm while he thought.

"I'll 'ave one of me girls show yee up, then. And I'll 'ave one of me boys care for yee steeds." Berthold said with a slight, respectful bow of his head. "Would yee gents like another while I fetch 'em?" He motioned to their drinks.

Charles pushed his own foreword across the bar with a slight, almost apologetic smile, indicating that yes, he would like another. Please.

Melbourne furiously wrenched a bolt from the forehead of the still twitching orc, and reloaded her crossbow with practiced precision as she moved on. Darting out from behind the tavern, with its roof and side now engulfed in flames, Mel looked frantically around through the turmoil of the main street with her bow raised.

"Axton! Axton!!!" She called sharply for her son, her voice lilting but with a high, cutting edge, her long red hair bright like the fires all around as it whipped about in the wind, rain dampening the lose curls. She spotted Tobias down the street from her. He was a good man, and a fresh wave of rage filled her already enflamed small frame as Ghamorz drew her blade from his body.

Mel quickly aimed at the orc's thick thigh and loosed a bolt to fell her, then swiftly lowered the crossbow to reload it from the quiver beside a short dagger at her hip so that she could fire again.

Brawley backed across the floor as fast as he could, swinging the touch all the while. Rain struck his face as he backed out of the house, and fresh air reached him, causing him to cough harshly as his longs expanded to breath in as much as he could. Head spinning and ears ringing, the touch fell from his hand as blackness at the corners of his eyes threatened to subdue him. But he fought it, and so did not pass out. But by this time, his body was so exhausted that he could do nothing but lay there and breath. The rain was cool on his face.

"We'll take that one," Draugnot shouted to Olgregda while pointing at Leona. The girl was young and strong, and not injured. She would be valuable to them yet. Turning back to Aldreda he jerked the sword out of her body and took a step away, preparing to head back into the town.

Olgregda rushed forward at Draugnot's direction with glee, getting to the girl just as she scrambled up. She grabbed Leona's arm firmly with a cackle, "Humie girl! Be still. No strug- ouch!" She yelped as Leona bit the back of her hand, slipping free for a second before being snatched up again. And though she struggled,  she soon weakened as Olgregda held her tighter and tighter.

"She's a strong one," Olgregda said in the orc tongue to Draugnot as she joined him, dragging Leonara with her, "But she will break, and she will work. I'm sure of that."

Leaving Olgregda to deal with Leona he prepared to finish Brawley off--the man looked too weak to make the journey home and wasn't worth the time. He started up the slope, but paused when Orkhan appeared in the doorway.

Orkhan stepped towards Brawley, taking a moment to catch his own breath while the man lay on the grass. Using his boot, he roughly rolled Brawley so that his face was looking up towards the orc. He wanted to see the look on his face while he killed him. Raising the sword, he prepared to plunge it straight down into Brawley's chest.

Judah was exhausted by this point. His entire body was smeared with a wet mixture of mud, blood, and soot; and he was starting to fear that the orcs were gaining an edge over the struggling settlement. Many of their trained soldiers hadn't had time to properly gear up for the fight, and thus were trying to battle in their housecoats--making it easier for the orcs to land fatal blows on areas that would normally be protected by armor.

Despite his condition, Judah's mind was far away from his own body. He was kneeling next to the body of the man who had been like a father to him for nearly his entire working life--Lord Varxis. The mighty Lord had been struck down from behind by a cowardly blow from an orc while he was trying to help extinguish one of the fires. He hadn't seen the orc coming up from behind, and didn't have any chance to defend himself from the lethal blow.

And so, as the rain padded down upon him, his breathing slowing into a calm rhythm, he looked into the ugly face of his enemy, fire light glinting off of its dark, rough skin.

He had yearned to die in battle since he became a warier at the age of sixteen. But once the wars were over, and men like himself went back to farming and the like, he had never felt at peace with the prospect of old age being the one to have the final blow... Brawley was not afraid of death, and so now, with it looming over him, he let that be known as stared it down.

Orkhan was moderately surprised at Brawley's reaction, but mostly disappointed that it wasn't as dramatic as he had hoped. Most humans would have cowered and pleaded with him for their lives--he liked it when they did that. It was more interesting.

In any case, there were many more people still running lose in Camden... it wasn't like he wouldn't get another shot at it. After this half second moment of contemplating, Orkhan brought the sword down through Brawley's chest with enough force to shatter his breast bone. Since his own sword was still holstered on his waist, he decided to keep Brawley's large sword for himself. It could do some more damage yet tonight.

"Let's keep moving," he said gruffly to Draugnot and Olgregda. "We only have until sunrise."

"M.....ell...?" Tobias murmured something that sounded vaguely like her name. His eyes were clouded and unfocused, and his breaths coming in quick, ragged gasps.

"Tobias!" A man, Gerald, frantically called as the stocky figure came rushing out  of the smoke. "Oh God no... no, not you..." He sounded tormented to see his friend. "We have to move, to get him outta here... they're killing everybody now."

"I know." Mel said, suddenly quiet as her eyes momentarily clouded. Linton. She thought of her infant son, his limp body having been tossed carelessly aside by the orc who thought only for what was of use to him, which was her...

In an instant, she snapped out of her fog and her sharp intensity was back. Holding her crossbow at the ready in her right hand, she slid her left under Tobias' arm to haul him away.

"Gerald. Have you seen Leighton?" She asked, speaking of her husband, owner of the tavern and friend to all, "He got Axton out when the tavern caught ablaze, but I haven't seen them since."
