The location for the new human settlement could not have been better. Fertile land nestled in small river valley with plenty of standing timber to provide building material and open fields for herds of livestock to graze. Over the past few months, over 3 dozen wagons had arrived to help settle the land. And all seemed well.

Occasionally, scouts were sent into the surrounding countryside to explore and to ensure there was no danger. But the scouts consistently reported that the land was quiet. And it wasn't until autumn that trouble came.

Anna frowned and moved to block him again "No, you are going to tell the truth about father. You are going to clear his name" She insisted, though how she was going to do that, she didn't have a clue.

Aelfric had only been holding the smallest bit of hope that Gytha was in the cage, but it still felt like a crushing blow to see that she really wasn't there.

His eyes met Reba's and he didn't recognize the disheveled girl immediately.  It had been 3 years since he'd last seen her.  But it did not take long for him to see the family resemblance to his late friend, Strider, and he knew he had found Strider's missing daughter.  And if he could not rescue Gytha, at least he could rescue Reba!  A new wave of determination energized him, prompting him into quick action.

He wasted only a moment contemplating his options, but the scrawny creature made his decision easier by threatening the girl with death.  It was just too risky to keep him as a hostage.

"You first," he told Gomez as he suddenly angled the cook's sharp blade and pushed hard, intending to plunge the knife into the creature's neck...

Laethros let out a short derisive huff, then changed his tactics slightly.  He looked her in the eye,  "You think Ragnar's gonna give a drat about that?  He's got more pressing concerns, lass."  He paused, letting that sink in.  "If clearing your father's name is what's important to you, you'd be better off ensuring I live until this is all over.  And that ain't gonna happen in Aberdeen."

With his attention focused intently on Reba, Gomez didn't immediately see Aelfric's hand move towards his throat with the knife. He saw the blade flash out of the corner of his eye and immediately threw up his arm in a desperate attempt to stop the blade. "No! Wait!" He wailed as the blade sliced deep into his forearm, jarring to a stop only when it hit bone only inches from his neck.

"Really, please, wait, don't kill me, please!" After his snarl at Reba he looked positively pitiful as he begged Aelfric for his life. It wasn't the first time someone had tried to kill him... but he didn't actually want to die.

Ruby was almost hanging on the door, waiting for the other two females to exit the cage. Her back was still hurting from the improvised surgery her 'master' had given her to help her heal. "Just kill him and let's get out of here and find Gytha and the others. I think they got away on the horses when I was caught" She said quietly then frowned and glanced around "Have you seen father?" She was still tired from everything that had happened and her mind had temporarily forgotten her father's death.

Laethros didn't attempt to rise yet and stared up at Anna.  "Then just don't help," he said flatly.  He was willing to sit here all day until the stubborn girl realized he wasn't walking back to Aberdeen.

-

Aelfric cringed as Gomez wailed.  If the fight attracted attention from the few orcs remaining the camp, this could easily spell the end for him...  and possibly even for Reba.   If the creature's pitiful pleas tugged at his heart strings, he showed no sign of it and brought the knife back and plunged it forward again, hoping to silence the thing quickly...

Gomez screamed as Aelfric drove the knife down a second time, a high pitched and piercing noise that might have made even the hair on an orc stand up. His bloodied arm, weakened from the last blow, wasn't strong enough to stop the knife a second time and it plunged into his shoulder--sinking down to the hilt.

He fell back against the door frame, clutching the knife still embedded in him. "They will kill you, scum..." He hissed at Aelfric, spitting foul smelling phlegm in his face. "Every last one of you, Camden is only the beginning. You have nowhere to run."

Anna stared at him with her eyes narrowed in anger for a minute before a sigh escaped and she moved back a few paces, taking a seat. She wouldn't let him go anywhere but towards the town no matter how long it took.

~~
Reba stood straighter and used the cage door to bash the orc though she had to grab the side of the cage to remain standing a moment later. "Just kill him and let's get out of here before another one comes" She said, glancing around them worriedly.

Laethros couldn't help marvel at the girl's single-mindedness.  Orcs could very well be headed their way right this minute, ready to sack Aberdeen and here she was, worrying about her dead father.

He actually hoped the orcs and Gomez were on their way as they had planned.  That might give him the best chance of surviving.  "Suit yourself girl.  I'm content enough to wait until the orcs get here," he said and pushed himself over about a foot to a grassy spot on the side of the road, getting as comfortable as his broken leg would allow.

--

In a hurry to start running, Aelfric reached down and pulled the knife from Gomez, but wasted no more time to ensure he was finished off.  With that wound, he'd bleed to death soon enough.  But if any of the other orcs had heard the scream, their chances of escaping would be shrinking by the second.  "Let's go," he said, reaching to grab Reba's hand with his free one and pulled her from the cage.

Anna could be very stubborn, but even she knew it wasn't safe to stay out here and be so bull headed. She gave it about five minutes before she got up and moved to stand over him again, dropping so that her knee would hit his chest and reaching for his hands to tie them together with the rope.

~~~
(I thought they were there with her in the cage?)
Reba moved when he grabbed her hand, trying to stay close to him despite the pain. She would not be able to keep the pace up long, but there was no way she would stay in this place any longer than they had too. "The orcs, they are headed to get slaves from all the towns. That's why they aren't here" She said, already gasping for air a bit.
Laethros appeared as if he would cooperate, letting her take his left hand, but then reached quickly toward her belt with his right hand, attempting to regain his knife.
Anna frowned as she grabbed for that hand, sitting back to keep the knife as out of reach as she could and still be getting his hands tied. If he managed to grab it, she would grab it also, trying to keep control of the weapon
(I don't remember exactly, but we can assume they were all in the cage)
Gomez's scream had not gone unnoticed, but the camp appeared mostly deserted. Nobody was rushing towards them with torches and swords. The burly black orc, Kagan, had been watching the scene with interest from the shadows. The four prisoners were of little use to him at this point in their injured state, and the raiding party on Camden would soon be bring fresh bodies.
"Won't we go after them?" Mazoga couldn't mask the surprise in her voice. Her fist was clenched around a heavy club, ready to beat them into submission.
"Not yet," he responded quietly. "I want you to follow them, but don't engage. I expect they'll be heading for Aberdeen. Get what information you can about them. It doesn't look like Gomez will be able to offer his services any longer."
From the shadows of the filthy prison Danielle crept up behind Reba, her eyes wide. The once outgoing and confident young girl looked like a ghost, thin and frail, like she would blow away at the slightest breeze. "A-are you sure they aren't watching?" She whispered, glancing nervously outside. The orcs frightened her so much that she would rather stay in the cage and obey them than be caught a second time and punished for it.
Unaware that Kagan and Mazoga were watching them, Aelfric hurriedly ushered Danielle and Luella forward.  "Now's the best chance we'll have," he coaxed, trying to get them to hurry up.
"Toward that hut, then straight into the trees beyond," he directed.  "Don't stop."
How he was going to tell Reba that her father was dead, he didn't yet know, but first he needed to get them clear of the orc camp.
--
Laethros closed his fingers around the knife's handle, but had barely pulled it from Anna's belt before her hand closed around it too.  Normally, he could have overpowered the girl with ease, but not now.  His only advantage was that his hand was below hers, giving him slightly more control.  But his whole torso shook with the effort and pain it took to simply keep her from taking the knife.
Reba nodded and led the way for the other girls, keeping a look out around them also. She knew her father would want he to get away if it was at all possible, so she didn't try to stop this from happening. She looked back and reached for Danielle's hand to hold it and give the girl a little confidence.
~~~
Anna grunted and tried to take the knife from him. He would normally have been able to throw her or turn them if not take it outright, but he was hurt and weaker than normal, as she was but not as badly. She tried to get up to gain more leverage, but slipped, all her weight for a brief moment pushing down on the handle of the knife

When Anna slipped, Laethros lost his grip on the knife completely and it plunged straight down and sliced through the man's trousers and his thigh muscle.  He looked down, momentarily stunned, as a red stain began staining his pants.

Anna cursed and took the knife, moving back from him then dropping the knife to the side. She hadn't meant to do that. Her hands started shaking and she shook her head. "I didn't mean to"

Laethros put a hand over the wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding, but bright red oozed between his fingers.  For a few moments, he face twisted in something between shock, pain, and anger.  "There's nothing to do about it now, girl.  Go on, leeaf me here to die in peash...," his words starting to slur with the loss of blood.

--

With all the girls finally moving, Aelfric took one last look at Gomez as he started sprinting after them, taking up the rear to make sure no one got left behind.  Even after the creature's torment, he felt a stab of guilt at leaving the orc-ish creature suffering, but there was no going back now...

Reba kept a hold on Danielle's hand as they headed for the forest. She just hoped they could get away and not have the orcs follow them.

Anna shook her head again, moving back but not leaving yet. She couldn't find the strength to stand or to turn away from the sight.
